cranks of the order will come through uniformly and smoothly as a normal production run, whenever they are released.

(Actually, if we are to get 2000 finished cranks it will be necessary to produce from 2100 to 2200 forgings.)

Republic Practice.

In one or two respects there has been a departure from VCM practice as shown in Ry's memos.

The time for cooling the ingot has been reduced from 14 days to 5 days, apparently without ill effects.

A square ingot mold is used on this steel at Republic. Reason not given.

The analysis of the first heat does not exactly agree with the average analysis of 6 heats recently submitted by Ry:-

Specification for first heat :-

Carbon Silicon Manganese S P NI CR{Mr Cra???ster / Mr Chichester} MO
.30 .15 .60 - - .65 .90 .90
.33 .25 .80 .030 .030 .85 1.10 1.10

Actual first heat :-
.335 .25 .70 .013 .017 .77 .92 1.01

Average 6 English heats :-
.330 .21 .61 .015 .013 .59 1.18 1.07

In order to avoid extraneous changes likely to disturb the results, it is proposed to make the three further heats as close as possible to the analysis of the first heat.

Further 300.

W.G. will send us a quotation on the further 300 - 350 forgings from the three 25 ton heats.

In this connection there is a proposal on foot to increase the price on all aircraft steel subject to magnaflux test, by $10 a ton. This is to cover the steel cos. for steel returned to them in the form of forgings which reveal inclusions when magnaflux tested during or after machining.

The Wyman-Gordon Co. is opposing this proposal as regards nitriding steels, since these cannot be magnafluxed when finished, and the steel for the must therefore be accepted or rejected on the basis of initial tests.
