Report on examination of the steering gear of chassis 2301 after prolonged use in France. The steering gear was removed from the chassis and taken to pieces. The parts were carefully examined for wear and signs of fracture. No cracks or breakages were found and the only parts which showed signs of wear were the cheeses in the nut. They were both slightly slack (about .002"). The nut was a splendid fit on the worm and all the other parts were in perfect condition. The cheeses were quite tight on the forked lever and the lever was quite O.K. There was slight wear on the small lever which anchors the control mechanism below the steering box at the point where it bears against the stops. Also the ball on the pendulum lever was worn at the parts where the contact pieces bear. On the whole the gear is in excellent condition consid- ering that it has covered 17600 miles on indifferent roads. X963 | ||
