X.3129 - NON TREMBLER TYPE BATTERY IGNITION FOR POST WAR CHASSIS

So far as we can say at present, as the result of preliminary tests we have made in connection with the temporary ignition scheme for 7-CA sent to Mr. Royce, we do not think that it will be essential to alter the profile of the cam in the R.R. chassis contact breaker, as we have obtained very satisfactory slow speed results with the cam as it is at present. There are, however, other modifications which will be necessary to make to this distributor and contact breaker. The most important one of these will be making provision for a condenser of suitable size. This condenser should be made as a small mica block condenser of the highest quality mica similar to some which we have recently obtained. Every precaution should be taken to make sound and solid electrical connections between the condenser and platinum points, as The condenser itself should be as near the platinum points as possible and as near to a cubical shape as reasonably possible. The length and breadth of the condenser should be approximately similar to those dimensions of the small condensers we have already made. The condenser should, of course, be suitably housed, and we consider that spring connections should be avoided.

Another point that requires modification is the position of the slot locating the distributor arm in relation to the high tension distributor points, this should be such that when the platinum points are set at .020" apart, the leading corner of the distributor arm should be exactly opposite a distributor point, at the instant of break.
