To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to BJ. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X3465 R2/M14.12.22. STANDARDISATION SHEETS X.1034. X.3465. I have received standardisation sheets which are not marked for any particular chassis, i.e., whether Goshawk or 40/50. We can generally tell, but it would be better to mark them. Regarding the modifications to the present 40/50, these should only be done where it is absolutely necessary, as we do not want upon the road a small number of any different type or with any different details. We are hoping to have "Seagull" ready by when the present stock of parts are used up. I am referring to changes in the steering box, and oil indicators on the crankchamber etc. Regarding the broken steering boxes that have been traced to collisions, we do not think it would be any better if we changed the metal as the stresses caused in such accidents might break other parts, or overstress other parts which are enclosed within the box, and would therefore not be as easily found as a broken steering box. You will see therefore that we ought to go slowly on making alterations to this chassis, of which there are so many thousands already made. We ought to concentrate on giving all the attention to the distinct modifications which we have in hand. You have now "Stork", Heron", "Seagull", in addition to the aero engine work in hand, which should absorb our whole attention and which we should press on with, with all poss. speed. | ||
