1260 To Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/Lec. from HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} c. RMC. Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} c. Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/Ms. RMC/AK. c. Hec. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} DT. HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}1/VS.{J. Vickers}10.9.38. SUB-CONTRACT DIE WORK - B.III AND B.50. We have carefully perused your Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/Lec.S/B.8.9.38., but apart from calling the attention of all concerned to the inefficiency of the present system the memo in question does not appear to serve any useful purpose. As you are aware, RMC/AK. has for the past eighteen months assumed full responsibility for all experimental chassis forgings and has from time to time discussed prices either with you or the Order Office officials. It is obvious that the Order Office have been consulted in every case, since they are the only authority for sending official orders, and in view of your remarks it would appear that a lot of unnecessary duplication has taken place. It has been our policy for some time to produce as many lightly stressed components as possible in aluminium bronze to enable the design to become stabilised before committing ourselves to the production of dies. On highly stressed members, however, e.g. pendulum and front suspension levers, we have, and shall continue to instruct the necessary dies, since it is more economical to proceed in this manner than to plough these components from the solid. The present system of obtaining quotations is confusing, and we suggest that the whole meth... those concerned in the order Office and s... versant with forging technique and has a ... forge capacity.
