R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. C. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X5040 BY2/G.20.7.28. 20 HP. CHASSIS - PISTON RINGS. -------------------------- We have made one or two attempts on production to get away from the 'L' shape ring, and whilst we have failed on the Phantom the plain rectangular ring at the moment seems to be satisfactory on the 20 HP. The reason we are now able to use a plain rectangular ring is that we of course applied the stiffening correction to the cylinders where the bolts previously caused distortion, and as a result the cylinders are sufficiently accurate with the bolts pulled up under load to allow of the rectangular ring being used. I tried this out by ordering first 12 sets of rectangular rings to be fitted, and when these proved to be satisfactory I put in hand a further 60 sets. These are coming through at the moment, and no complaints have been received from the Test Department, who are aware of the fact that the rings are being fitted and are particularly watching the question of over-oiling.
