X. 9940 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E/DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to CJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} S E C R E T. E3/M29.1.24. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. FOUR WHEEL BRAKES. X.9940 We note you think the high speed servo is nearly hopeless. The following experiments have yet to be tried by Derby who have had the instructions :- (1) Jointed shoes to correct design. (2) Servo with increased wind-off and pull-off spring mounted on servo to stop chunking. (3) Increased leverage from servo to back brakes to reduce work done by servo, and chunking. No.(3) reduces the work on the servo to half the present amount, and calculations given in HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/LG26.1.24., based on the heating experiments on the servo have been made to shew that the car thus equipped will descend a gradient on 1 in 4.4 at 14.5 M.P.h. indefinitely without overheating.
