The following is a memo, received from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} in America, dated 27.11.35 :- "I went yesterday to Federal Mogul who make Cadmium bearings for Graham. They were rather a sticky crowd and not giving away any information, but were willing to metal a set of shells for test. They did tell me the composition is 0.5% silver, 0.75% copper and the rest Cadmium. The tin content must not exceed 0.3%. Centrifugal casting is best but for flanged bearings our ordinary whitemetal process is adequate. How to prevent bad adhesion they were not giving away. The metal is cast at 800°F.{Mr Friese} How to quench it or prevent oxidation was not forthcoming. They do not advocate flanged bearings mainly because of cheapness of metalling long tubes subsequently parted off into strip bearings. They claim the coefficient of friction 50% that of whitemetal and a reduction in oil temperature of about 10°C. Their parting remark 'Do not change to Cadmium if whitemetal is satisfactory' may have its significance. They claim corrosion only takes place with bad oils and not good oils as G.M. Research insist. In the afternoon I went to Long to talk about clutches. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} was at Saginaw, so I did not go to Hudson or Packard where he wants to go also. They recommend a 12" clutch for the SpectreCodename for Phantom III. It works perfectly on the Packard at 360 lbs.ft. The Zephyr of 225 lbs.ft. has 10" clutch The V-8 Cadillac has 11" clutch. | ||
