86051. Expl. Dept. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.1/MJ. 6th. December, 1934. The A.T.Speedometer Co. Ltd., Chronos Works, North Circular Road, London, N.W.2. For the attention of Mr. H.R.Buckland. Dear Sir, We have had an occasion recently to remove from Mr. Fedden's Bentley chassis the speedometer which had given trouble. We found that on this speedometer the trip mileage recorder was recording twice as fast as the total mileage recorder. Upon examination it was discovered that the fitting of the brass bracket holding the total mileage recorder drive spindle had been incorrectly carried out. In fact, the workmanship at this point was reprehensible, a paper packing having been inserted under the bracket, one of the screws with it's thread stripped, and the drive worm not engaging correctly with the screw on the drive magnet. The number of the speedometer is I.217. We do feel that this failure has been due to bad workmanship and we should be glad if you will kindly look into the matter for us with a view to preventing any further occurrence of this nature. It is our opinion that more care should be taken in the assembly of these instruments on your Production benches in view of the special nature of the same and the price we are paying for them etc. I am sure you will agree with me in this sentiment and ensure that this does not happen again. We have put the instrument right ourselves by removing the paper packing and re-tapping the hole for a 7.BA. screw. Yours faithfully, For Rolls-Royce Ltd. | ||
