X.7791. TIMING MARKING OF E.W.6. MAGNETO FOR SS.{S. Smith} CHASSIS

On the S.S. cars it is understood that the
timing datum for both battery and magneto ignition is
considered to be the fully advanced, so that both
ignitions are adjusted to synchronise in their fully
advanced position.

The timing marking of the E.W.6. magneto
however, as shewn through the window in the distributor
cover and by the marking of the distributor wheel tooth
through the lubricator window, corresponds to the fully
retarded timing of the break. Apparently this point
has been overlooked, because in the Test Dept. the magnetos
are actually timed to the engine from the break, and
not from the indications given through the windows.

For Instruction Book purposes however, it appears
quite necessary to ask for these window indicated timings
to be altered to correspond to the break in the fully
advanced position instead of the fully retarded, and we
suggest that Messrs. North be approached to make this
alteration on standard E.W.6. magnetos.

Apparently special consideration will have
to be given to cars which will have been delivered with
magnetos with the timing indicators referring to the
retarded position.
