Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Mr. Elliott, I have your letter of the 2nd inst. and I was going to write to you to-day anyhow. What I was going to tell you is that our efforts to reduce the weight of the cover for the Bentley battery were successful. You will remember when I discussed the matter with you and Mr. West we thought that about one pound could be taken off the weight of the moulded lid{A. J. Lidsey} which was in common use by various manufacturers, and still make it a stronger job than the ebonite. When I was at Dagenham last week I saw the first few covers and they have come out very well, they look quite strong and they are strong and they are just one pound lighter. It has cost us rather a lot to get this one pound off but that is unfortunately our affair! Anyway, I think you will be pleased with the complete battery when you see it. So far we have not had any call for complete batteries. I would like to pass this information on to Mr. West so in order to save you the trouble of doing it, I am sending this letter in duplicate. With regard to the batteries for the special chassis that you mention, I am getting particulars from the Works to see what we can do but you are not very drastic in your demands re height which is what I thought you would be and I shall be surprised if we cannot do something for you. I will write you further in the course of a few days. With regard to the capacity, I am not quite certain WORKS : DAGENHAM DOCK, ESSEX. BRANCHES AT GLASGOW AND MANCHESTER.
