Many thanks for your suggestion regarding the construction of the steering box shaft. I think the proposed shaft is sound and would operate well, but is rather difficult to make and results in a heavy and bulky job.

For the modification to the "Goshawk" steering box I do not think we should attach the second arm by means of a taper serration as this necessitates that the endway and angular positions shall both be exact. I should like you to make a scheme in which both arms are carried on the shaft by means of a parallel serration.

The arms should be a press fit on the shaft, and it will be necessary either to broach them in pairs or employ registering devices for reproducing accurately the correct angular position of the serrations relative to the crank arm.

A thin sleeve on the shaft spaces the arms at the correct distance as in the sketch, and the ball bearings are of larger diameter and carried on the hubs of the arms. I think we should allow from 1/4" to 1/2" more room in width in the box than is shewn on N.657, as the nut bearings on this scheme look rather narrow.
