R3/M3. 12. 12. 24. TO CG. FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to B.I. Copy to - HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re. AMERICAN MODIFICATIONS. X4616 We (RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and R.{Sir Henry Royce}) spent several hours on these last evening and have passed most things without comment, as we really had not time to do more than examine the drawings generally. There does not however seem any thing decided-ly wrong which we should take exception to. It was understood that these modifications could only be recommended by me as a temporary expedient as we considered very much more work had to be done to the chassis to make it thoroughly up-to-date, consider-ing the improvements which we have found during the past 10 years, (since the beginning of the war.) However I consider that it is of little use writing at any length on the subject at the moment. On referring to our old work we continually find it rather difficult to depart much from the prac-tice we instituted some 15 years ago, but the technical progress in heat engines, tyres, fuel, etc, and condit-ions of motoring, make it imperative that the chassis shall be modified in many ways. Regarding the item of clutch spigot oiling I cannot see that the proposal of drilling through the length of the spigot can do any harm, and HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} can test if it makes a reliable means of conveying oil to the clutch spigot bearing. We always disagreed with can-celling the valve scheme. We have always found it satisfactory if fitted with light worsted plug, unless something effective is proved which is simpler.
