I thank Mr. Wormald and Mr. Hives for the fractured pivot which is evidently the same species of fracture as those broken on the road. We have now to find out how this reverse stress has been produced on the road and, so far, the only way seems to be for a combination of a tyre out of balance and a loose cross tube - which you have in hand to investigate.
