1332 Experimental Department 1st. December 1936. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}4/AP. Messrs Dunlop Rubber Co.Ltd., Fort Dunlop, Erdington, BIRMINGHAM. For the attention of Mr. Lambourn. Dear Sirs, Many thanks for your letter of the 27th inst. By comparing these figures with those of the cornering power in your letter LJL/T.286 of October 10th., it appears that an inch increase in rim width provides 5% more cornering power for the same degree of comfort obtained by a slight decrease of tyre pressure the wider the rim. From the point of view of handling, therefore, we want to use as wide a rim as possible, and should be glad to have your views on the maximum ratio of rim width to tyre section that will not cause damage to the tyres. As regards running tyres at varying cambers, we can arrange a Phantom III car to give the required angles. When this is rigged up we will let you know so that you can take the necessary measurements on our concrete skid pan. We hope you will let us have the figures on the relative merits of the India and "90" tyres as soon as possible. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
