SPRINGS.
--------

Referring to the question of spring protection and lubrication arising out of the Test Department's attempt to put my instruction for protecting the spring into force, they used the following precaution, which has turned out to be excellent.

After the springs were treated with Lanoline and thoroughly impregnated oil proof paper was carefully wrapped round the springs being carried close up to the clips and the central holding down bolts. The spring was then served with adhesive tape, the tape being 1½" wide and fitted after the manner of a puttee, each turn of tape overlapping the previous one, the tape being drawn tight so as to form a close fitting job to the spring and served close up to the clips. After three weeks on the road, and being specially washed with high pressure water from a high pressure jet examination showed that the tape absolutely prevented the entry of water, with the result that the spring was in precisely the same condition at the end of its period as when it was fitted. In view of this I suggested, and it has been agreed to by everybody concerned that we should treat all springs in this manner, and finally fit the gaiters over the puttee as described above.

The Works should take special care to fill up the space between the clips and the plates with Lanoline before serving with oil proof paper and fitting the puttee. Special attention is necessary at the clips as indicated to ensure water being actually prevented from reaching the plates under the clips, as in serving the tape we have so far not been able to cover the clip itself, but merely to serve the paper and tape close up to the clip after filling the space as mentioned above with Lanoline, thereby ensuring a water tight joint.

We shall for the moment continue to fit gaiters with the lubricators fitted, but in the near future these will be deleted.

Will ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} take the necessary steps to arrange with our gaiter suppliers to delete the lubricators as soon as possible. It may mean that we will have to take
