FITTING OF ALUMINIUM PISTONS.

With reference to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}7/F25.9.19., will you please ascertain that the pistons to which you refer were made in acc-ordance with the latest instructions to the shops. The pistons as now manufactured have the area surrounding the gudgeon pin hole cleared away by grinding.

With regard to your expression "as we have now to be prepared to carry out our pre-war practice as regards the curing of piston knocks", it is clear, is it not, from our conversation of a few days ago, that the hand work on pistons which was the practice before the war is not likely to carry us very far in curing our present trouble, and therefore should not be applied as a practice to these pistons. The procedure which was agreed is dealt with in my note Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}6/W22.9.19. I rather gathered from our conversation that there was little we could do on this question except in those cases in which piston taps persist and pistons and cylinders are within the limits on the drawings you would then call for matched pistons and cylinders which gave the finest clearances allowed by the drawings. You will remember that this procedure arose out of your request for advice as to what action you should take when you found that piston knocks persist with pistons and cylinders which you had ascertained to be within the somewhat wide limits given on the drawings.
