TESTS OF 20 HP. DYNAMO WITH VARIOUS SPECIAL POLE PIECES.

A series of tests on 20 HP. dynamos with various special pole pieces has been carried out, and the details of the results of these tests are contained in my assistant's report AC.73, copy attached, from which you will see that the general result of such tests is to indicate that very little improvement, if any, over our present standard shape of pole pieces is possible. All these various special pole pieces have been solid, whereas the standard pole pieces are laminated. Therefore to complete the series of tests a set of poles of standard is now being prepared, and it is expected that the performance with this set will not differ materially from that of the laminated poles.

It will be remembered that the relative performances are compared on a standard volt-ampere characteristic which is equivalent to average running conditions on the chassis, and the temperature rises are systematically taken into account so that a correct comparison of performance in regard to heating effect is obtained.

AC.73 attached.
