VALVE SPRINGS.
CHOC-A-BLOC LENGTH. Y2993

Experiments were done to find out if a useful rule or ratio could be obtained connecting the actual choc-a-bloc length with the nominal one, i.e., that found by multiplying the wire dia. by the number of coils.

Springs do not shut up quite solid due to scale, enamel, coils not being flat, etc.

The attached results shew that the method recommended by the D.O. gives pretty close agreement. This consists simply of adding two-thirds of the wire diameter to the nominal solid length (defined above). The method gives considerably closer results than adding a constant percentage to the nominal solid length.
