To Mr. A R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} c. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to Rdy. X1015 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}14/AW.24.9.36. Rear Axle Construction. Our recommendations are - (1) That we immediately buy a Ford Rear axle at a cost of about £15, and subject it to bump tests to prove the strength of the welded tube. (2) If successful, we proceed with a 10,000 miles test with the least possible delay on butt welded tubes adapted to our existing type of axle. (3) That the half floating scheme as sketched by Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} should have design consideration before we are committed to any new type of axle. From the tests we have already carried out on the Scott tube, we do not like it for a Rolls-Royce car.
