The second move was to make up and fit a cross member between the frame, opposite the lamp pillars, the ends of the member fitting tight up to the steel plates, using the same bolt holes with longer bolts.
Result - This had the effect of holding the frame rigid about the base of the lamp pillars, but on the road we still had a little movement at the lamps due to the pillar itself whipping.

We then stayed the lamp pillars to the new cross member with flat strip steel, and the results were very satisfactory, the lamps staying steady under all running conditions.

This scheme of bracing the lamps together with the cross member was then removed and fitted to 3-B-IV.

Owing to the frame on 3-B-IV being .2" less in width than B-23-AE we were unable to use the .25" steel plates used on B-23-AE to clamp the brackets together, and therefore used the standard plate which is .125". 3-B-IV was now fitted up as standard with the new cross member between the frame and bracing rods to the pillars.

The results obtained on 3-B-IV were not so good as on the Streamlined Bentley, the percentage being 100 on B-23-AE to 75 on 3-B-IV.

The difference in percentage we put down to the two types of mudguards used and the mounting of the same, and the fact that we were able to make a more rigid job of the brackets on the Streamlined Bentley.

Conclusions.

If we continue with this type of lamp fitting we require the frame to be braced at the foot of the lamp pillars to stop twisting. With this section quite rigid, our length of lamp pillars will still require stays to steady the lamps, particularly as we have now changed to the P.100 type.
