RE GOSHAWK - WATER COOLING SYSTEM. I-687 X.4240 X 766

(1) The reason for the water boiling is entirely due to th ineffective working of the fan or its drive.

(2) We cannot expect the radiator to be efficient with a following wind, unless the fan is working properly.

(3) Elsewhere we shew the modifications to make a larger and slower speed fan which would be easier to drive owing to its larger pulley.

(4) Occasionally however we must expect the fan belt will be neglected or circumstances will be such that the water will boil, in which case we must endeavour that steam only be discharged and the minimum possible quantity of water. This time should be ascertained.

(5) We cannot expect the engine to run without water in the head, and if it does run we should expect a cracked head, which fortunately is much easier to replace than cracked cylinders.

(6) To obtain the result desired in para. 4, we must make the engine so that it does not accumulate steam in the water space of the head or the cylinders. In this respect we may find that our present system of pipes, though neat, is not ideal.

(7) It will be remembered that the Marmon is considered by all of us to have perhaps the best engine which is turned out in America. This engine has water connections whih can be compared with ours, also Napiers, and many others.

(8) In the system as arranged we rather expect that on the water boiling a quantity of steam will accumulate in the contd:
