Results of a crankshaft modification test, comparing weight and stiffness.

Bailey - Chief Engineer} ORIGINAL CRANKSHAFT TESTS. X5010 We have carried out a test on a 20 HP. std. crankshaft with the ends of the webs modified to reproduce the effect of Lec.2480 as far as possible. We tested the stiffness of the shaft before and after the modification. The weight of the shaft before the modification was 28 lbs. 13 ozs., the weight after the modification was 26 lbs. 12 ozs. The total reduction in the stiffness of the shaft due to the modification was 3.65%. We consider, from our calculations, that the reduction in the polar moment of inertia of the shaft due to this weight removal will more than counterbalance the small fall in stiffness and that as a nett result the critical period of the shaft will be raised.
