REAR SILENCER.

Complaints have been recently received from both the Erecting Bay and the Test Dept: regarding the position of the Rear Silencer on several chassis.

In the first case, to overcome the lagged portion of the silencer body fouling the near side diagonal draw bar, Mr Bailey has instructed the works to form a recess in the Silencer Shell following the direction of the draw bar.

The second complaint deals with the opposite end of the silencer, where at light loading of the chassis during erection and test, the inner brake cable fouls the side of the silencer shell.

We attach to Mr Day's copy of this memo, blueprint of a full size layout made by us in checking up the position according to drawing dimensions, which clearly shows the fouling in question; also a quarter size layout traced from the chassis arrangement drawing F.4226 embodying the suggestion of Mr Bailey, of using the suspension bracket as a pivot and swinging the front of the silencer towards the side channels of the frame about .500, to clear the draw bar. This movement carries the rear end towards the chassis centre line well clear of the brake cable at any loading.

We believe that some time back a scheme was prepared for lowering the rear silencer about .500 which should obtain a similar result to the above suggestion. This however, would mean several new pieces, and in order to deal with present production chassis, Mr Bailey would like Expl: D.O. to look into the matter as quickly as possible.
