| 722 NEW DEVELOPMENTS Automotive Parts, Accessories and Production Tools Greater Safety-Operating Convenience Installation of Westinghouse 150-hp. 5500-r.p.m. dynamometer in a prominent engine plant. It marks the first installation of a dead-front magnetic control panel which is said to add to safety and convenience. Westinghouse is looking ahead to the time when the automotive industry will demand a dynamometer capable of turning over at 10,000 r.p.m. Portable Tester For Proving Welds Air Reduction Sales Co., New York, N. Y., has just placed on the market a portable testing machine for checking tensile and ductility characteristics of weld specimens. The Airco portable tensile and bend machine is compact and light and may be carried directly to the welding job. The machine consists essentially of an oil pump, a hydraulically actuated piston or ram, two heads—one fixed and one movable—for gripping the test specimens, and four symmetrically located steel shafts, two of which transmit the piston motion and load to the movable head. The other two shafts maintain the alignment of the two heads, and prevent the introduction of bending stresses in the tensile test specimen. The load on the test specimen is indicated on a 6-in. pressure-gage of special construction, carefully calibrated against a standard dead weight tester. The machine is calibrated, using clean lubricating oils covering the range of viscosities sufficient to assure that the viscosity of the oil does not materially affect the accuracy of the machine. Any good light crank-case oil can be used. The oil chamber is provided with a filter to prevent any dust particles, which may drop into it, from entering the oil passages. For the bend test, the machine is provided with an anvil which fits into the movable head, and which bends the specimen against a pair of supports set 3 in. apart and cast integral with the body of the machine. The entire unit, machine and case, weighs only a little more than 200 lb. Cimatool Improves Paulins Tool Jig Since acquiring the Paulins Tool & Engineering Co., the City Machine Tool Co., Dayton, Ohio, has developed a universal type of the Cimatool jig and jig-locking mechanism based on an improvement of the patented Paulins designs. The Paulins linkage and locking designs have been preserved in the newer designs. In the spring-type mechanism, the two springs exeAero Enginert from 90 to 105 lb. pressure. The redesign has included both positive lock and spring-type mechanisms. As shown in the illustration, all parts of the toggle and clamping mechanism are fully enclosed and protected. A large-diameter barrel materially adds to the sturdiness of the tool. Changes in design of manufactured parts need not obsolete a jig of this kind. The main body of the tool remains serviceable in the face of even drastic production changes. Complete stocks of jigs and parts are maintained in Detroit and Dayton. For users who desire to utilize the Cimatool-Paulins special lock on jigs of their own design, these locks are available. Sperry-Cammen Adher-O-Scope A testing apparatus which permits of grading lubricating oils according to the tenacity with which they adhere to metallic surfaces has been placed on the market by Sperry Products, Inc., Bridge Plaza, Brooklyn, N.
