Mr Johnson from F.H.R.

Mr Platford's memo EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}30/T71112 concerning chassis delivered during October.

You will remember that I had a report which dealt with the test of light pistons and this seemed half-hearted. They have plenty of ideas and instructions to work on with regard to this subject.

Re noisy side shafts, I have read that these are as good or better than at any previous time in the history of R.R. I understand side shafts are very good sometimes and others fair; a special effort should be made to send out nothing but very good ones and to determine the reason of their being noisy.

Is our changing of gears worse than Napier or Daimler ?.

Every effort should be made to improve the footbrake at once; we are very slow about this point.

Re coils, I like the position on the L-E cars, can we not fit it on other chassis also ?. A smaller model also should be tried.

I am glad all chassis now being delivered have small flywheel and spring couplings, and are also fitted with special heat treated butted torque tubes and stronger
