(2) It seems absolutely suicidal to go on with the old construction by the modifications we are proposing, of: (1) Loose base ring of wrought metal to carry a force we ought to remove, at the risk of water leaks and much first cost. (2) The thickening of the liner and its extra weight to reduce the deflection instead of removing the cause. (3) The change in the bore with loss of power of 4.5%, about equal to the extra weight of the alternate construction. We all know the great importance of this aero work to the welfare of our Co., and my responsibility to the Directors and Shareholders is such that I must make myself heard or give up that responsibility. R.{Sir Henry Royce} P.S. It is understood that J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} S. construction cannot be considered at the moment because we cannot get the pistons out. The only change I want in the alternate construction (in addition to the extra cooling you have arranged for) is that the liners shall clear the bore of the crankchamber so that no distortion is likely from these bores not being true with one another through errors of workmanship, bad erection, or temperature. h.{Arthur M.
