Complaints of Second Gear Sliding out.

With further reference to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}11/T.28.10.35, and my memo E.6/HP.24.10.35, we issued on 30.10.35 a design - N.Sch.4677 showing a modification which we believe should be effective in overcoming this difficulty. Unfortunately it requires the replacement of the change speed fork first speed pinion and sliding dog clutch, but I fear that we cannot avoid this. We propose to put this on the next 20/25 HP. - 21-G-4 going to France.

With regard to Mr Walker's suggestion, as per BY's memo, I had a similar notion about two years ago and am under the impression that we tried it out and found it would not work, but I cannot now find any confirmation of this. However, I do not believe that with a slightly reverse cone effect on the dog clutch it would retain the gear against sliding out, and am of the opinion that we shall have to go as far as shown on N.Sch.4677.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
