Dear Sir, Re:- STEERING ROLLER ASSEMBLIES With further reference to our letter of the 5th.March, reference JLH/WAH, we have now been able to carry out some further investigations regarding the adjustment of bearing N.2790 and now have pleasure in offering the following comments. Firstly we would explain that, when checking the dimensional adjustment of these parts we can arrange only lightly to clamp the inner races together and we have found that, in order to meet your requirements for frictional resistance, it is necessary to give the bearings a considerably easier adjustment when the races are only lightly clamped owing to the elastic compression which occurrs when they are clamped by a fully tightened nut and bolt. In the case of bearing N.2784 where a distance piece is fitted between the inner races, we have found it necessary to allow slight end movement in the lightly clamped condition, and it is for this reason that the bearings have had labels attached to them indicating a small amount of end movement. Further investigations have shown that with bearing N.2790, owing to there being no distance piece, the elastic compression of the parts is rather less, and consequently a rather tighter adjustment is necessary in the lightly clamped condition. | ||
