TO DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to Gd. " BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} " GY. " WH. " EFC. X.3740. RS{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary} STARTER FOR AMERICAN 40/50 H.P. CHASSIS. X.3683 X.3558 We send you herewith drawings Nos. LeC.1155 and 1159 shewing the starter gear and pedal motion respectively for the above. Drawing No.LeC.1155 was made before the decision to build chassis with right hand steering, and it requires re-versing to bring the motor on to the left hand side of the chassis. Drawing No.LeC.1159 is quite correct for right hand steering. The ratio of gearing on the starter motor overall is 33.2 to 1. The ratio on the present car starter is 24 to 1. Mr. Royce wishes the motor to run at a higher speed, and would like its length reduced so that the armature core is approximately three-quarters of the length of the present starter motor core. It is desired to use as much as possible of the mechanism shewn on these two drawings for applying starters to old cars, and Mr. Royce would like you to put in hand the necessary schemes for carrying this out, making such alterations as offset reduction gearing on the motor casing, as you find necessary. We shall shortly send you a scheme shewing how the rear end of the motor suspension tube is carried by the bracket which supports one arm of the gear box. We shall also send you another scheme shewing the starter motor switch. Would you kindly put in hand the detail drawings for the attached. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
