RE 16.G.4. COACHWORK.

We thank you for your HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/MJ28.3.30. re the above.

When we took the car away from Barkers the body was free from rattles, but they soon developed. All appear to be in the doors and scuttles. We tried hard to cure them but it seems almost impossible to keep anything on the front of the body tight, owing to the high speed jellying of the front end of the chassis frame. On a rigid body such as a saloon to tighten up the scuttle isolation helps matters but on this car it made things worse. Total isolation made a marked improvement but the relative movement at the scuttle and dashboard was objectionable.

A considerable improvement was made by letting the tyres down to a very low pressure.

We are of the opinion that it was useless for us to try to make that body perfect untill the tyres were changed from Port to standard Silent Tread, and that something has done to stop the frame jellying.

We are sorry that we overlooked the question of correcting the angle of the squabs of the xxxx front seats. Barkers have offered to do them for us if we will let them have the car.

If you could let us have the car for a few days when you have completed the chassis modifications we will deal with the seats and at the same time attempt to cure the rattles. In this latter case Barkers were handicapped by the fact that they could not be allowed to ride in the car to test it for rattles.
