YOUR REF Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}22/KW. 9th, October 1936. Messrs. Rolls Royce, Ltd., Derby. 62. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Martindale. BRAKE DRUM LINERS. We acknowledge with thanks your letter of the 5th, inst. You will appreciate that so far there has been no great quantity of Brake Drums used incorporating Liners of our "Bricromium" in housings of aluminium alloy, and it would, therefore, be very difficult for us to attempt to give you any side by side comparison. We can, however, give you results on some tests which were made by Ferodo a year or two ago. This test consisted of a "Bricromium" Liner around which aluminium was cast. In this case the Liner had eight key-ways formed by a shallow slot in the Liner. Each Drum was run at a superficial speed of 500 ft. per minute against constant braking force of 668 lbs., produced by a pair of hinged shoes fitted with Ferodo Bonded Asbestos linings, and operated by a Lockheed cylinder, the pressure in the cylinder being adjusted to maintain a constant braking force throughout the entire duration of each test, the braking force being maintained until the rubbing surface of each Liner reached 650ºF.{Mr Friese} Each test was repeated 10 times. In the case of the Liners incast in aluminium alloy, the maximum permissible temperature was reached in five minutes, whereas with the Cast Iron Liner with a Steel shell, the maximum temperature was Cont'd..
