CANTEEN AT CLAN FOUNDRY.

You will have seen the estimate for the proposed Canteen at the Clan Foundry, outlined in EJJ.2/M.3.5.40.

We know that you are not tremendously in favour of the idea of this project, but it does appear to us, however, that if the complete staff of the Chassis Development Section is to be located at the Clan Foundry for the next two or three years, and it is difficult to imagine that they will be there for a shorter period, in view of the outlay already incurred in transferring test equipment, etc., it is going to be exceedingly unfair to the Personnel if they are not provided with reasonable facilities for obtaining food.

Facilities for eating, in Belper, are already inadequate for the Rolls Royce people stationed there, quite apart from the fact that is more than 20 minutes walk, there and back, from the Clan to the Skating Rink.

At the present moment the Staff are working two nights overtime a week and can hardly be expected to go from 8.30 in the morning to 8 at night as a matter of routine, on a sandwich.

We appreciate that the administration have gone to a considerable amount of trouble to ensure that the Chassis Division shall be in existance and in a healthy condition after the war, and that in order to achieve this they have spent a large sum of money on the Clan Foundry. It appears to us to be a great pity to damp the enthusiasm of the Staff by failing to supplement the accomodation for working which is provided, by reasonable facilities for obtaining a sufficient amount of food to keep them going, particularly in view of the fact that a Canteen has been provided at Slack Lane.
