To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.5/MH.{M. Huckerby} x 6003 Messrs. S.Smith & Sons Ltd., Cricklewood Works, London, N.W.2. 23rd. November 1937. For the attention of Mr.Dorer. Dear Sirs, We are returning to you a Bentley thermometer to DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}1360 (marked for the attention of Mr.Dorer) the capillary of this instrument having fractured at the point where it enters the bulb. We are anxious to get over this type of failure and would welcome any suggestions from you which would help to do so. We think that matters might be improved if the wire armouring of the capillary were stopped about 3/8" short of the bulb and sweated to the capillary at that point. Then the capillary could be sweated into the bulb so that there was no possibility of the solder breaking away - all that could happen with this arrangement would be that the capillary itself might break. Will you please repair this thermometer and modify it in this manner so that we can try it out as soon as possible. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
