RE SHELL AVIATION SPIRIT "B".

We have carried out the following tests with the above spirit:-

HP. and Consumption Tests.

REVS. Eastern Spirit. Mex Spirit. Eastern Spirit. Pts. per HP. hr. Mex Spirit. Pts. per HP hr.
2000 370 364 .53 .54
1800 354.6 352.8 .518 .52
1700 343.4 338.3 .52 .52
1600 331.2 326.1 .52 .53

We have also carried out some tests on an engine to prove the difference between this spirit and the ordinary war spirit as regards vaporisation. We arranged this engine so that we cut out the ignition on one side of the cylinder and also that on that one cylinder we could vary the water temperature in the cylinder jacket to any degree and still maintain the rest of the engine and heating to the carburetter at normal temperature. We ran the engine at constant speed and load and adjusted the mixture to minimum for maximum power. We judged the vaporisation by holding a cold steel plate in the stream of mixture which was emitted from the exhaust port. The steel plate was frequently changed so that the temperature of the plate would remain the same.

The tests we did with this spirit was to start with the water at boiling temperature in the cylinder we were observing and then gradually cool the water down until the first
