NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I EXHAUST NOISES. CUT OUT CONTROL.

Practically every Phantom which is tested is unsatisfactory as regards the noises from the exhaust.

In most cases this is due to the fact that the cut out is not properly closed and again in practically all cases this is due to the cut out control rods having been bent.

The whole mechanism for the operation of the cut out is considered to be unnecessarily exposed and too feeble for the condition to which a chassis is exposed during the time it is at the coachbuilders being fitted with its body and afterwards.

It is found in practice to be quite impossible to protect these rods even by removing them on arrival of the chassis and replacing them at the time of our final test as even after that the car is returned to the coachbuilders for a final polish and during this time the floor boards are nearly always removed and it may be taken for certain that whenever the floor boards which are removed at a coachbuilders, and in most cases they are removed after ultimate delivery of the car, that some damage is done to these rods with the result that the cut out does not close completely.

It is considered that the operating mechanism for the cut out should be completely redesigned. In this connection the mechanism of the 45 h.p. Renault cut out would appear to be worth examination.

Will you please take up the matter with the departments concerned and advise me of the results of so doing.

CWB.
