PHANTOM WING STAYS. X. 8390
X. 7390

We left this work with Sales last Dec., and it was agreed that they would get templates of suitable wing stay shapes from Barker's and Hooper's, and that Derby should decide on a compromise, and produce these stays on G.2. series.

We note that this programme has fallen through owing to opposition by the coachbuilders.

Referring to Barker's criticisms in their memo. to Sales, in order:

(1) We agree that reinforcement of the wing tip is necessary in the case of some wings, but do not agree that it should be part of the stay, but it should be part of the wing reinforcement.

(2) Naturally, they do not want us to supply stays, for their great trouble lies in the fact that they have a large hand forging shop, only a few years ago augmented, and it is their difficulty to keep it filled, hence they want to produce wing wings, grids, and wheel carriers if possible.

Hooper's are not so foolish, and are replacing their hand forged work by sheet metal.

(3) We cannot agree that the various wing shapes form a serious objection to our stays. They may be made hot and bent to any reasonable curvature with moderate ease.

(4) Lastly we point out that for years we have supplied similar stays on the 20 HP. with considerable success, and we fail to see where the Phantom problem differs from that of the 20 HP.

We know Mr. Royce expects us to use these stays on G.2. series.
