SIDE STEERING TUBE ENDS. X7430 X7450

The SS.{S. Smith} cars that have run in France have so far been fitted with side steering tubes having ends to N.sch.2301. This is the first time we have ever run one of these ends through a 10,000 miles test. This end was evolved when we were in considerable trouble with steering shocks and we were contemplating putting friction in the column.

Owing to the jellying of the front end on 18-EX during the 10,000 miles test it was really impossible to form an intelligent opinion on the steering.

While therefore we have no justification for condemning N.sch.2301 as at present fitted to the SS.{S. Smith} car we should like you to hold up these parts until we have been able to run them in France with the chassis in the condition approaching its final form.

We feel tolerably certain, from our previous experience, that the arrangement we shall finally adopt on the SS.{S. Smith} chassis will be N.sch.2258 - this is the present standard end on the Phantom.
