ROBOTHAM, ESQ., Experimental Department, Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., D E R B Y. Dear Robotham, I was very glad to see that the Bentley did so well in the TT; but only wish he had managed to be first. I hope you were satisfied with the tyres ? The following is an extract from a memo. which I have received from Mr. Worth:- "Your memo. of 27.8.36 arrived while Iwas on holiday. Since returning I have gone into the matter of the new design tyre which we are making for Bentley with a view to increasing the silence and I expect the mould to be ready on the 18th September. I think we can therefore safely promise Mr. Robotham that we will ship him a set of 4 tyres on the 25th September. You will remember that when we were at Derby Mr. Robotham proposed that we send 2 tyres only in any design which we wished to be tried out. However, after thinking it over I feel that a more satisfactory trial can be made with a set of 4 as the noise from the front as well as from the rear must be taken into consideration, in other words, certain noises may develop in running from the rear tyres while another type of noise may develop on the front wheels, especially in cornering. I do not think that I should visit Derby with you on the next trip as there will probably not be very much to talk about. After Mr. Robotham has had a chance to test these new tyres, we can probably see him at the Show and learn his views." I/ | ||
