Re: Shock Absorber Valve Springs.

We have found that the trick of bending the valve springs is a complete cure for squawking valves on shock absorbers, and we believe that it would be a good idea now to pass this information on to the branches since the matter is so simple and can be done in a few minutes.

It is not quite the sort of thing we should like to see incorporated in a Maintenance Bulletin, but I suggest that this information should be passed around so that the branches can do this instead of removing the instruments and sending them in for us to do.

The first importance, of course, is to make sure that any noise is caused by a squawking valve. This is best done by disconnecting the shock absorber from the axle and giving it a sharp downward pull. It is found that a valve squawks only on the down stroke of the lever and a squawking valve can always be reproduced by hand in this manner, although usually it is easier to fit some sort of a long lever on the arm in order to get the pressure easily.

The cure is made by taking the spring and bending it at about its center until when one end is set on a flat surface the top of the spring is about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch off vertical.
