Failure of various springs due to suspected faulty material and manufacture.

I do not think there is any doubt but that the springs fail owing to faulty material and manufacture.

We have bounced 150 of the old type of spring but could not find one which gave a poor note, but out of 50 taper springs we found three which gave a poor note. I think this batch of taper springs must be a bad one. Further, two taper valve springs have broken on the test engine in running a 10,000 miles test of helical gears; these are the first springs we have ever succeeded in breaking on any test engine at the Works.

It certainly seems that the long continuous tests will find out faulty springs.
