X.4151. RE OPERATING PIN FOR CLUTCH OIL VALVE. X.3339

We understand that a complaint has come from America to the effect that the present clutch oil valve and its operating pin are not entirely satisfactory. It is understood that the former sometimes leaks and floods the universal joint, with the result that oil is flung out on the generator belt and causes slipping and trouble. It is also understood that the set screw securing the adjusting pin sometimes works loose thus preventing the valve from working, and causing the pin to rattle in the coupling pin. We have sketched out an alternative method of fixing this pin, the suggestion of which is due to Mr. Caswell, the advantages claimed being that the fixing is more positive, and that oil will not so easily work out into the universal joint. We have modified Mr. Caswell's original suggestion to some extent in order to make the hole through the coupling pin no larger than it is at present and thus not to reduce the strength of the pin.

In addition to this there has been, from time to time complaints that the oil valve does not work truly, and this has been attributed to the fact that as it is at present made it is given a considerable clearance in the guide. We have therefore suggested on this scheme that the valve should be made with three flats, the area of which equal the area round
