EAC.8. RADIATOR WITH INTEGRAL SHUTTERS, ETC

Handwritten notes: X7250, X8250 (crossed out), N966

As regards the thickness of the radiator when fitted with integral shutters, we suggest that the space occupied by the shutters themselves might be reduced about .200", and on N. sch. 2346. (print herewith) we have shewn the shutters them- selves reduced in width about .100", one additional shutter added per side to make up the space, and by riveting separate levers to the centre shutters, and passing the operating rods through the matrix instead of through the top tank, so that the ends of the connecting rods can come outside the tank wall when in the fully open position, the space occupied by the shutters can be reduced .200".

On this drawing, and also on N. sch. 2350. (print here-with) we have shewn R's proposal to reduce the height of the middle of the tank .400", N. sch. 2350. being made to shew that in spite of this the radiator still looks like a Rolls-Royce, and the lightening effect may be considered an improvement. The radiator is also raised in height .500" as R.{Sir Henry Royce} suggests, and we have shewn the tubes 4.500 long, so reducing the total overall width to 5.750, compared with present standard 5.5, first EAC.8. 6.25., and R's car still more.

The modifications to the radiator proportions which are shewn on these drawings have been discussed with Sales, who have agreed to them from the point of view of appearance. We believe in fact they had themselves made suggestions for almost identical modifications.

With reference to the radiator efficiency the following indicates how the front area has continuously increased recently:-

| CAR. | Front area. | Increase compared with pre-N. series. | Increase compared with V.{VIENNA} series Phantom. |
|-------------------------------------------------|-------------|---------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------|
| Silver Ghost, pre N. series. | 486. | -- | -- |
| Silver Ghost, U. series. | 510. | 4.94% | -- |
| Phantom, V.{VIENNA} series. | 510. | 4.94% | -- |
| Phantom, W. series. | 534. | 9.88% | 4.7% |
| EAC. 8. original. | 565. | 16.25% | 10.8% |
| EAC. 8. as now proposed - (N. schemes 2346 & 2350.) | 588. | 21 % | 15.3% |
