1175 file Leyland Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/10. 12.10.40. H.Spurrier,Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner}, Leyland Motors Ltd., LEYLAND. Lancashire. Dear Spurrier, Thank you so much for the interesting time you gave me at Leyland's on Friday. I was sorry that I could not drive the tank but hope to have a go on my next visit. I must congratulate you on the syncromesh on the bus chassis, which really worked remarkably well. I am most interested in the behaviour of the crankshaft on your "flat twin-6". I will look up the figures we got out as to what ought to happen and you can compare them with your own results. I was also interested in the tri-metal bearing. Possibly you will be testing some of this material to destruction against lead bronze. I so, I shall be glad to know the comparative figures of merit. Markland seemed to think the tri-metal bearing I was looking at was perfectly all right but hear we should have considered that it was beginning to show some signs of debility. I will dig out the tappet which we ran at the top of the rocker. If you have to fit any automatic tappet adjustment, and I cannot see why this should be necessary if you use the best practice on your valves and seats, then this tappet of ours is much less temperamental than the one you are using. Since your gearbox is so quiet I cannot see any fundamental reason why your timing gear should be noisy, and are consequently not bothering you with any details of our tooth design. - Continued - | ||
