STRENGTHENED REAR AXLE CENTRE CASING.

H.Sch.4767.

With reference to E/Hdy.{William Hardy}2/HP.28.2.36. regarding the above, we note that the suggestion is made to continue fitting the Rear Insp: Cover for the reasons given in RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/KTM.24.2.36.

We ourselves see no reason why this should be retained, as our methods of assembly and adjustment do not make use of this aperture.

Referring again to RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/KTM.24.2.36 and to our sketch WKS.182 attached we explain our methods as follows:-

Item (1). Centre Casing is supported and secured in a cradle as shown.

Item (2). A special plug through which a rod can slide to engage with tooth space is screwed into one of the plug holes. We find this very effective and much quicker to use and attach to the casing than the device shown on RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/RH{R. Hollingworth} sketch, one of which we had but has now been discarded.

Item (3). For the inspection of the gears in position on the car, we find the smallness of the aperture and close proximity of the axle to the Petrol Tank a reliable inspection cannot be made. Our method being to lower the Prop: Shaft and withdraw the Pinion and Housing complete.

Furthermore, we believe that the deletion of this cover and consequent fitting of a through bolt would materially add to the strength of the casing at this point.

In view of the foregoing, we suggest that the opportunity to make a saving should be reconsidered.
