X.6058. TEMPERATURES ATTAINED BY IGNITION COILS UNDER RUNNING CONDITIONS.

We want to make up-to-date tests on the road of the temperatures attained by ignition coil primary and secondary windings (by resistance measurements) in the case of the up-to-date ignition coil on both 20/25 and 40/50 chassis. Will you please arrange with AJL. to give Mr. West the opportunity of carrying out these tests in a similar manner to those which were carried out in Oct.1928. (See EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 4/T2.11.28 in X.4653).
The ignition coil on the Phantom is in a hotter position than on the 20/25 and in a position which in the case of the Silver Ghost1907 40/50 historic RAC 15,000 miles trial we departed from in favour of the wheelcase position. The coil was replaced in the hotter position when the Phantom was designed and although we have mentioned this point once or twice in correspondence to R. {Sir Henry Royce} he does not appear to have considered it, though we personally should advocate the removal of the coil back to the wheelcase position if possible.
