A series of tests have been carried out on B.2J (O.H.C.) unit, with a view to finding a suitable combination of exhaust manifold and silencer, in connection with the design of Bentley III. B.2J was thought to be a suitable engine to use for the tests, as the cylinder head had six separate exhaust ports, and by arranging different combinations of exhaust ports on the manifolds, could easily be adapted to give comparisons of various systems. We have endeavoured to determine the following :- (1) Whether a 3 port manifold has any advantage over a 4 port manifold or vice-versa. (2) How much power gain is obtained by running two Standard Bentley silencers in parallel, as against one silencer - (a) with 4 port manifold. (b) with 3 port manifold. (3) The effect of dividing the 4 port manifold in the centre, i.e. between Nos. 2 and 3 ports, and each half exhausting into a separate silencer. (4) The effect of running two downtake pipes into the front expansion box of one Standard Bentley exhaust system- (a) with 4 port manifold. (b) with 3 port manifold. (5) A complete analysis of a Standard Bentley exhaust system. Continued. | ||
