X3675 Ho Els [Stamp: REC'D JUN ... 1927] Oy21-L-52427 May 24th, 1927. Mr. R.{Sir Henry Royce} W. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Bailey, Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby, England. (Copy for attention of Mr.Hives " " " " Mr.Haldenby) Dear Mr. Bailey: Re: Carburetter - Section 5030 Slotted Suction Chamber I attach for your information a print A-10185, showing a modification which has been made to the suction chamber using two slots .200 wide and .050 deep in place of the drilled holes in the base. We have now run this on two cars a total of about 20,000 miles, and can find no disadvantage. The purpose is to take no air into the carburetter except that which passes through the air cleaner. We have the idea also that the slight restriction has the effect of checking violent movement of the piston in case of backfire. We have done the same thing on a Silver Ghost car used without an air cleaner for 5000 miles, and on the air-cleaner conversion job for Silver Ghost cars shown in attached print M-390. Probably Mr. Hives would be interested in checking our results on Phantom carburetter. Yours very truly, Maurice Olley MO/E | ||
