Dear Mr.Grylls,
The small pressings are pushed in the nipple threads to prevent dirt getting in during transit only. A screw driver is usually used to remove them and then fit a nipple. We do not do this because of the variety of nipples used. We do however have a nipple fitted during balancing and remove it to fit the tin cap.
You will understand that the nipple once fitted is left in place permanently.
Yours sincerely,
J.A. Daniell
