Dear Sirs, We are in receipt of your letter of the 21st instant and we note that you wish us to supply six Carbon Glands to Drawing EXS.1777. We are pleased to advise you that these will be going forward to-day. For your information we would advise you that the carbon gland in question is known as our standard Pattern SR.519. The type of gland concerned is one which we have supplied in many thousands to the Automobile industry. It usually forms a part of the Morgan-Stuart patent gland assembly. With this particular assembly a rubber ring is used in conjunction with the carbon gland and in the circumstances we are including with the carbon rings which we are forwarding to you a similar quantity of rubber washers. The bore size of these washers will be approximately half the size of the shaft diameter so that when [struck through: stretched] on to the shaft they will take up a trumpet shape as sketch below. We believe, however, that you are familiar with the Morgan-Stuart gland as this has previously been introduced to you by our Mr. Sparkes and Mr. Wyborn when discussing Water Pump Glands. A considerable amount of time was spent by us in Laboratory tests before arriving at the most suitable rubber to meet the conditions experienced in water pumps and assuming, therefore, that the carbon glands you have ordered are intended to work on the Morgan-Stuart gland principle, we suggest that the rubber washers we are forwarding should be used. We trust your experiment will prove satisfactory and assuring you of our co-operation in this matter, we are, Yours faithfully, THE MORGAN CRUCIBLE COMPANY LIMITED. per:- [Signature] [Diagram Labels] RUBBER DRIVING PIN CARBON | ||
